If you export services from Ahmedabad — software, engineering design, pharma documentation, back-office work — you file one EDF a month with your AD bank, listing every invoice raised to foreign clients that month, within 30 days from the month's end. Units inside an SEZ, including SEZ units in GIFT City in nearby Gandhinagar, file with the SEZ Development Commissioner instead. Software exporters outside an SEZ may choose their AD bank or STPI. The rules are national; what's local is the mix of businesses, banks and setups you're likely to deal with.
Key takeaways
- Outside an SEZ: file with your AD bank (or STPI for software). Inside an SEZ, including GIFT City SEZ units: file with the Development Commissioner.
- Your AD bank is the bank where foreign payments land — make sure it's an Authorised Dealer Category-I bank.
- Not every bank or branch handles foreign exchange; some cooperative and smaller banks may not, so check before giving clients your details.
- October 2026 invoices are due by 30 November 2026; build a fixed monthly routine.
- Ahmedabad's engineering, pharma and textile-linked service firms should watch SAC and purpose codes closely, as their work doesn't always fit the "IT" boxes.
Who exports services from Ahmedabad
Without quoting numbers we can't verify, the city and its surroundings host a broad spread of service exporters:
| Type of exporter | Typical work | EDF points to watch |
|---|---|---|
| IT and software firms | Custom development, product engineering, testing | "Software" vs "Services" in field 1.1; AD bank or STPI |
| Engineering design services | CAD drafting, plant design, structural detailing for overseas clients | SAC and purpose code (P1009 is often relevant — confirm) |
| Pharma and life-sciences services | Regulatory writing, clinical data work, research support | Codes for R&D (P1008) vs other technical services — confirm |
| Textile and design studios | Print design, CAD for garments, catalogue work | Design SAC codes; mode of delivery is usually Internet |
| Back-office and KPO firms | Accounting, data processing, customer support | P1005 for accounting work; confirm others |
| Units in GIFT City SEZ | Financial and IT services | File with the SEZ Development Commissioner |
Our EDF guide covers the field-by-field basics that apply to all of them.
SEZ and GIFT City units: a different route
GIFT City in Gandhinagar includes an SEZ area. If your unit is inside an SEZ — GIFT City or any other SEZ in Gujarat — your EDF goes to the SEZ Development Commissioner, not your bank. Field 1.5 (category of exporter) should show SEZ.
Many Ahmedabad groups have one entity inside an SEZ and another outside. Keep them strictly separate: different invoice series, different EDFs, different filing authorities. Our guide to SEZ units and the EDF explains the SEZ side in detail.
Choosing and confirming your AD bank
Ahmedabad has branches of practically every large public, private and foreign bank, plus a strong cooperative banking tradition. That variety is useful, but it brings one trap: not every bank, or every branch, handles foreign exchange. Your AD bank must be an Authorised Dealer Category-I bank, and some smaller or cooperative banks may not be. Before you give foreign clients your bank details:
- Ask the bank whether it can receive foreign inward remittances into your account and handle export paperwork.
- Ask for the AD code for your export transactions — not the IFSC.
- Ask how it accepts the monthly EDF; each bank publishes its own policy under Regulation 19.
If your existing local bank can't handle exports, open a current account with one that can, and move only your export receipts there. Our AD code request letter helps with the second step.
A worked example: a Satellite-area engineering firm
Sabarmati Design Engineers Pvt Ltd, a fictional engineering-drawing firm with 35 staff in Ahmedabad's Satellite area, works for fabricators in Canada and the Gulf. It isn't in an SEZ. October 2026 invoices:
| Invoice | Date | Client | Country | Amount | Work |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SDE/E/26-27/112 | 08-Oct-2026 | Prairie Steelworks Ltd | Canada | CAD 14,200 | Shop drawings, warehouse project |
| SDE/E/26-27/117 | 22-Oct-2026 | Al Noor Fabrication LLC | UAE | USD 6,900 | Structural detailing, phase 1 |
| SDE/E/26-27/121 | 31-Oct-2026 | Prairie Steelworks Ltd | Canada | CAD 3,600 | Revisions and as-builts |
EDF entries:
- 1.1 Type of export: Services (engineering design, not software)
- 1.4 Mode of delivery: Internet — drawings sent as files
- 1.5 Category of exporter: Others
- Part 2B: three rows; SAC confirmed by its CA for engineering services
- 1.22 Total value: CAD 17,800 × ₹61 = ₹10,85,800, plus USD 6,900 × ₹84 = ₹5,79,600 → ₹16,65,400
Filed by email to its bank's trade desk on 9 November, well before the 30 November 2026 deadline. The first invoice (about ₹8.7 lakh) and the others are each under ₹10 lakh, so once paid they can be closed through a periodic declaration.
A monthly routine for Ahmedabad exporters
| When | Task |
|---|---|
| 1st–3rd of the month | Close last month's invoices; list everything billed to foreign clients |
| By the 10th | Prepare and sign the EDF; submit through your bank's channel |
| On submission | Record the acknowledgement number |
| As payments arrive | Check each FIRA: remitter, amount, purpose code |
| Quarterly | Submit a ₹10 lakh realisation declaration for small paid invoices |
| Monthly | Review unpaid invoices nearing 9 months from their dates |
Doing the EDF by the 10th leaves you clear of GST return work later in the month. Check the GST portal for your own return dates.
Local habits worth adjusting
A few patterns are common among long-established family businesses that have added service exports:
- Using a personal or cooperative bank account for foreign receipts. Move export receipts to a business current account with an AD bank.
- Invoicing from a shared domestic series. Start a separate export series so the EDF list is a simple filter.
- Relying on the CA to "handle it at year end". The EDF is monthly. Year-end clean-up of FEMA paperwork is far harder than a 20-minute monthly task.

Frequently asked questions
Where do Ahmedabad service exporters submit the EDF?
Outside an SEZ, to your AD bank — normally the bank where foreign payments land. Software exporters may also file with STPI. Units inside an SEZ, including GIFT City SEZ units, file with the SEZ Development Commissioner.
Can I use my cooperative bank account for export receipts?
Only if the bank is authorised to handle foreign exchange for your account. Many exporters use a current account with an AD Category-I bank for export receipts. Ask your bank before sharing details with foreign clients.
Is there an STPI centre near Ahmedabad?
STPI operates centres in several states. Check STPI's own website for the nearest centre and its services. Remember that STPI certification is no longer mandatory for software exports; you can file with your AD bank.
When is the EDF due for Ahmedabad exporters?
The same national deadline applies everywhere: 30 days from the end of the invoice month. October 2026 invoices are due by 30 November 2026, November's by 30 December 2026.
Do GIFT City units file the EDF with a bank?
Units in an SEZ, including those in GIFT City's SEZ area, file the EDF with the SEZ Development Commissioner. If you're unsure whether your unit is in the SEZ, check your approval documents.
Bottom line
For Ahmedabad exporters the job is the same as anywhere — the right bank, one form a month — with extra care for SEZ entities and non-IT service codes. Prepare your next form in our free EDF form generator.
