What is Acknowledgement Number?

An acknowledgement number is a reference issued when a filing or submission is received, serving as proof that a document such as an EDF, GST return or application was lodged.

An acknowledgement number is the receipt you get for a submission. Government portals issue them for returns and applications; banks may issue a reference when they receive a form, an email request or an upload through their trade portal. Whatever it is called, a reference number, ticket ID, inward number or acknowledgement, its job is the same: to prove that you submitted something, and when.

Why it matters for exporters

The EDF has deadlines. It must be filed within 30 days from the end of the month in which the invoice was raised, and the bank must then enter it into EDPMS within 5 working days (Regulation 18). If a question ever arises about whether you filed on time, an acknowledgement from the bank is your best evidence.

The form itself has a form number field (1.2), which may be left blank or allotted by the bank. Banks also publish their own policies on accepting EDFs (Regulation 19), so the type of acknowledgement varies: a stamped copy at the branch, an email reply, or a reference number on a net-banking portal. Our fact sheet does not prescribe a format, so ask your bank what it provides and keep it.

Record the acknowledgement, the date of submission and the form number, if allotted, in your EDF register against each month. If the bank later queries the form or you need to follow up on EDPMS entry, you will have the reference to hand.

Example

Sunrise Data Services LLP emails its October 2026 EDF to its bank on 24 November. The bank replies on 25 November with reference TRD/EDF/88412. Sunrise notes the reference, both dates and the bank-allotted form number in its register. In January, when a payment for an October invoice arrives, the bank links it quickly because Sunrise quotes the reference in its covering letter, drafted with the EDF cover letter template.

Common confusion

A bank acknowledgement is not the GST IRN or the ARN on a GST filing. Read EDF acknowledgement number: why you should record it.
