UPI QR Code for Shops and Freelancers: How to Generate One Free

A UPI QR code is simply your UPI ID (VPA), your name and, optionally, an amount and a note, encoded in a square that any UPI app can scan. You can generate one free in under a minute with our UPI QR code generator: type your UPI ID and payee name, choose whether to fix the amount, and download the image to print or paste on invoices. The money goes straight to the bank account linked to that UPI ID; the generator never touches it.

Key takeaways

  • The essentials are your UPI ID and payee name. Amount and note are optional.
  • Use an open-amount QR at a shop counter, and a fixed-amount QR on a specific invoice.
  • Double-check the UPI ID before printing. A one-letter typo sends money to someone else or nowhere.
  • Test every new QR with a small payment from another phone before you display it.
  • UPI is for domestic rupee payments. Foreign clients will normally pay you by bank transfer instead.

What is inside a UPI QR code

When a customer scans your code, their app reads a short payment link containing a few fields:

Field What it is Required?
UPI ID (VPA) Your virtual payment address, such as name@bank Yes
Payee name The name the customer sees before paying Yes, in practice
Amount A fixed rupee amount Optional
Note / transaction reference For example an invoice number Optional
Currency INR Set automatically

The customer's app shows your name and the amount (if fixed), and the customer confirms with their UPI PIN. Nothing about your bank account number or IFSC is exposed in the code. The UPI QR code glossary entry explains the format in more detail.

Step by step: generating your free QR

  1. Find your UPI ID. Open the UPI app linked to the account where you want money to land and copy your UPI ID exactly. For a business, use the ID linked to your current account, not your personal savings account.
  2. Open the generator. Go to the UPI QR code generator.
  3. Enter the UPI ID and payee name. Use the name customers will recognise, such as your shop or studio name.
  4. Decide on the amount. Leave it blank for a counter QR; fill it in for an invoice-specific QR.
  5. Add a note if useful. For an invoice, put the invoice number, such as "INV-2026-114".
  6. Download the image and save it with a clear file name.
  7. Test it. Scan with another phone and pay ₹1. Check the right name appears and the money lands in the right account.

Shop counter or invoice: two kinds of QR

Use Amount field Note field Where it lives
Shop counter, stall, clinic reception Blank (customer enters amount) Blank or shop name Printed stand or sticker
Freelancer invoice Fixed to invoice total Invoice number Bottom of the invoice PDF
Event registrations or fixed-price items Fixed to the price Item or event name Poster or ticket
Donations or tips Blank "Thank you" or cause name Website or table card

Example: a bakery and a freelance designer

Meher's Bakehouse in Nashik prints one open-amount QR for the counter. Customers scan, type the bill amount and pay. At day end, Meher matches UPI credits against her till slips.

Dev, a freelance illustrator in Pune, adds a fixed-amount QR to each domestic invoice. Invoice INV-26-047 for ₹18,500 carries a QR with the amount fixed at ₹18,500 and the note "INV-26-047". When his client pays, the note appears in his bank statement and he knows exactly which invoice was settled. Our GST invoice generator leaves room for a QR at the foot of the invoice, and our note on UPI QR codes on invoices has more layout ideas.

Printing and display tips

  • Size: big enough to scan from arm's length. Very small prints on receipts can fail on older phones.
  • Contrast: dark code on a white background. Avoid printing on coloured or glossy paper that reflects light.
  • Quiet zone: leave white space around the code; do not crop it tight.
  • Label it: print your payee name and UPI ID beneath the code so customers can confirm before paying.
  • Laminate counter codes so they survive spills and fingers.

Safety checks people skip

QR-code fraud usually works by swapping or pasting a fake code over a real one. Protect yourself and your customers:

  • Inspect counter codes daily for stickers pasted over them.
  • Ask customers to confirm the name that appears in their app before they pay.
  • Never scan a QR to receive money. Receiving money via UPI does not require you to scan anything or enter your PIN. Anyone who tells you otherwise is attempting fraud.
  • Watch your bank notifications, not a screenshot shown by the customer, to confirm payment.

UPI and foreign clients

If you are a freelancer with overseas clients, a UPI QR is for your domestic customers. Foreign clients will usually pay by international bank transfer or through a payment platform, and the money arrives with a FIRA or bank advice rather than a UPI notification. Export invoices need different details, such as your SWIFT code and, if you export under LUT, the line "Supply meant for export under LUT without payment of IGST". Our export invoice generator handles that format. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I generate a UPI QR code for free?

Enter your UPI ID and payee name in a free UPI QR code generator, choose whether to fix an amount, add an optional note, and download the image. Test it with a small payment from another phone before you display or share it.

Should my shop's UPI QR code have a fixed amount?

Usually not. At a counter, an open-amount QR lets customers type each bill amount. Fixed-amount codes suit invoices, tickets or fixed-price items where every payment is the same.

Can I add a UPI QR code to my invoices?

Yes. Generate a QR with the invoice total as a fixed amount and the invoice number as the note, then place it at the bottom of the invoice. The invoice number then appears with the payment, making reconciliation easier.

Is it safe to share my UPI QR code publicly?

A UPI QR only lets people pay you; it does not give access to your account. The main risk is someone replacing your code with theirs, so check printed codes regularly and display your payee name next to the code.

Can foreign clients pay me using a UPI QR code?

UPI is designed for domestic rupee payments, so foreign clients typically pay by international bank transfer or a payment platform instead. Use an export invoice with your bank's SWIFT details for overseas clients.

Bottom line

A UPI QR code takes a minute to make and saves you hours of chasing payments. Get the UPI ID right, test it, and label it clearly. Create yours now with the free UPI QR code generator.
