To change the nominee on your bank account, write a short signed letter to your branch giving your account details, the existing nominee's name, the new nominee's full details and your request to update the records — then fill in whatever nomination form your bank uses. Most banks treat the letter as a cover note and the bank's own nomination form as the document that actually records the change, so ask for the form when you hand in the letter.
Key takeaways
- A nominee is the person your bank pays the account balance to if the account holder dies. Updating it is quick and worth doing after any major life change.
- Your letter should identify the account, the old nominee, the new nominee and the reason (optional), and be signed as per bank records.
- Banks usually have their own nomination or change-of-nomination form; the letter speeds things up but may not replace it.
- Ask for a written acknowledgement that the nomination has been registered.
When to update your nominee
People set a nominee when they open an account and then forget about it for years. The nomination should reflect your situation today. Common triggers:
- marriage, divorce or the death of the current nominee;
- the birth of a child you want to name;
- a nominee who was a minor has become an adult;
- you opened the account in a hurry and left the nomination blank;
- you've moved, and the nominee's address on record is years out of date.
For business owners: nomination is generally available for accounts held by individuals, including sole proprietors' accounts. Company and LLP accounts work differently — succession there follows the entity's own rules and signatory mandates. Ask your branch what applies to your account type.

What the bank may ask for
Requirements vary by bank and by account type, so treat this as a list of things to be ready for, not a rule:
- the bank's own nomination or change-of-nomination form, signed by the account holder(s);
- witness signatures on the form, in some cases — for example where the account holder signs with a thumb impression;
- your ID if you're not known at the branch;
- the nominee's details exactly as on their ID, to avoid problems later.
The nominee usually doesn't need to visit the branch or sign. Ask your branch if it wants anything from them.
Joint accounts and multiple accounts
Joint accounts. Changing the nomination on a joint account normally needs the signature of all joint holders, or as per the operating instructions on record. Check with your branch before you send the letter, to avoid a second trip.
Several accounts at the same bank. Nomination is usually registered per account. If you want the same nominee for your savings account, fixed deposits and locker, list each account or deposit number in the letter, and ask whether separate forms are needed for each.
Mistakes that slow things down
- Signature doesn't match bank records. The most common reason for a request being returned. If your signature has changed, update it first.
- Nominee's name spelt differently from their ID. This can cause trouble years later when a claim is made.
- Leaving out the minor-nominee details when the nominee is under 18.
- No acknowledgement. Without one, you won't know if the change was made. Ask for a stamped copy or written confirmation, and check your passbook, statement or net banking profile afterwards.
A note for exporters and business owners
If you run a proprietorship that receives export proceeds into its current account, your nominee arrangements and your bank KYC both deserve a periodic check — especially after a change of address or a change in who runs the business. Our KYC update letter and address change letter cover the other routine requests, and the full set is on our bank letters page.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change my bank nominee online?
Many banks let you add or change a nominee through net banking or their app, for some account types. If yours does, that may be quicker than a letter. Where online isn't available, or for joint and business accounts, the letter and the bank's form are the usual route.
Does the nominee become the legal owner of the money?
Not necessarily. The nominee is the person the bank pays, which protects the bank. Who ultimately owns the money is decided by succession law or a will. Talk to a lawyer if this matters for your family.
Can I have more than one nominee?
It depends on the bank and the type of account. Ask your branch what its form allows and whether you can specify shares between nominees.
Is a nominee needed for a sole proprietorship's current account?
Nomination is generally available for accounts held by individuals, including proprietorship accounts, because the account belongs to the proprietor personally. Ask your branch to confirm and to give you the right form.
How long does a nominee change take?
Banks set their own timelines. Once you submit the letter and form, ask the branch when the change will be reflected and how you'll be informed, and check your account details after that.
Bottom line
A nominee update needs one clear letter and, usually, the bank's own form — signed as per records and acknowledged in writing. Draft yours in a couple of minutes with the free nominee update letter.
