When you are paid through Upwork, the EDF still goes to your Indian bank, not to Upwork: the AD bank for your EDF is normally the bank account in India where your Upwork withdrawals are credited. Businesses list each Upwork invoice of the month as a row in Part 2B, show platform fees through the net realisable value, and use the bank's FIRA or payment advice to prove realisation. Individuals working alone should note RBI's 7 October 2026 statement that they are not required to report.
Key takeaways
- Upwork is a payment and marketplace intermediary; your Indian bank is the AD bank for EDF purposes.
- Withdrawals often bundle several contracts, so keep a record of which invoices each withdrawal settles.
- Ask your bank for a FIRA or payment advice for each Upwork credit and check the purpose code.
- Upwork's service fees reduce what you realise; reflect them in NRV rather than changing the invoice amount.
- Upwork's own processes change; check its current India help pages instead of relying on old guides.
Does this apply to you
Start with your structure.
- Individual freelancer, personal account: RBI's Governor said on 7 October 2026 that individuals providing services abroad are not required to report, and RBI will issue FAQs. Keep records and confirm with your bank.
- Proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company: assume you must file a monthly EDF for your Upwork export invoices.

How money moves from Upwork to your bank
In broad terms:
- Your client funds a contract or pays an hourly invoice on Upwork.
- After any security or review period, the earnings become available in your Upwork balance, net of Upwork's service fee.
- You withdraw to your Indian bank account using a withdrawal method Upwork supports.
- Your bank receives the funds and credits your account in rupees.
The details, including which withdrawal methods are available, timings, any withdrawal charges and how transactions are documented, are Upwork's policies and change from time to time. Check Upwork's current help pages for India. On the bank side, ask how Upwork credits appear and what documentation your bank provides.
What goes into each EDF field
| EDF item | What to use for Upwork work |
|---|---|
| 1.4 Mode of delivery | Internet |
| 1.10 AD bank | Bank where Upwork withdrawals land |
| 1.12 Mode of realisation | Usually Others |
| 1.15–1.16 Third party | Ask your bank/CA whether Upwork should be shown as the paying third party |
| Part 2B recipient | Your client, with its country |
| Part 2B invoice no. and date | Upwork invoice reference or your own GST invoice |
| Part 2B amount | Invoice amount to the client |
| Part 2B NRV | Expected amount after Upwork's fees and charges |
| Part 2B remarks | Upwork contract ID, withdrawal reference once paid |
Upwork invoices or your own?
Upwork generates transaction records for each payment. If you are GST-registered, you may also issue your own export invoice to the client. Pick one primary reference per engagement and use it consistently across GST, the EDF and your accounts. Mixing references is a common reason reconciliations go wrong. If you raise your own, our export invoice generator adds the LUT wording.
FIRA, payment advice and the purpose code
Every Upwork withdrawal that lands in your bank is a foreign inward remittance. Ask your bank for a FIRA or payment advice for each one. Check:
- Remitter: it may show Upwork or a payment partner rather than your client. That is why the third-party question above matters.
- Amount: the withdrawal amount, in the currency received.
- Purpose code: should reflect your service, for example P0802 or P0807 for software work, P1007 for advertising or market research, P1006 for consulting. If it is wrong, request a correction using our purpose code correction letter.
If FIRAs are not issued automatically, a written request listing each credit works well.
A worked example
Codewave Solutions, a proprietorship in Bhopal run by Arjun Mehta with a GSTIN, earns through Upwork. In October 2026 it had three billable items:
| Ref | Date | Client country | Invoice amount | Upwork fee (per statement) | Expected net |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UW-8841 | 6 Oct 2026 | United States | USD 1,600 | USD 160 | USD 1,440 |
| UW-8907 | 20 Oct 2026 | Netherlands | USD 950 | USD 95 | USD 855 |
| UW-8963 | 31 Oct 2026 | United States | USD 2,100 | USD 210 | USD 1,890 |
Fee figures are illustrative; Arjun takes actual figures from his Upwork statements. He files one October EDF with three rows by 30 November 2026, amount at invoice value and NRV at the expected net.
On 12 November he withdraws USD 2,295 (the first two invoices) and on 18 November USD 1,890. His bank issues payment advices for both. Arjun's EDF register records which invoices each credit settled and the advice references. Since each invoice is far below ₹10 lakh, his bank may close the EDPMS entries on his periodic declaration of realisation, which he prepares with our realisation declaration tool.
Timing: do not park earnings on the platform
The realisation window for services is 9 months from the invoice date. Earnings sitting in your Upwork balance have not reached India. Withdraw regularly, and if a client dispute holds funds for a long time, keep the correspondence and speak to your bank before the window closes.
GST and tax notes
If registered for GST, export of services is zero-rated when all Section 2(6) IGST Act conditions are met, usually under LUT. Platform fees and their GST treatment are a separate question for your CA. The EDF does not change your GST or income-tax obligations.

Frequently asked questions
Who is my AD bank when I get paid through Upwork?
Your AD bank is normally the bank in India where your Upwork withdrawals are credited. Upwork is not an AD bank, so the EDF, if you need to file one, goes to your bank.
Do individual Upwork freelancers need to file the EDF?
RBI's Governor said on 7 October 2026 that individuals providing services abroad are not required to report, and RBI will issue FAQs. Individual freelancers should keep records and check with their bank, while businesses on Upwork should assume they are covered.
How do I show Upwork fees on the EDF?
Keep the invoice amount in the amount column and enter the expected receipt after Upwork's fees in the net realisable value column. Your Upwork statements explain the difference if the bank asks.
Can I get a FIRA for Upwork withdrawals?
Ask your bank for a FIRA or payment advice for each Upwork credit. The remitter may appear as Upwork or a payment partner, so keep your Upwork transaction records alongside to show which client and invoice each credit relates to.
Should Upwork be shown as a third party on the EDF?
Because the payment reaches you from the platform rather than directly from the client, ask your bank or CA whether to declare Upwork as the third party in fields 1.15 and 1.16. Follow their answer consistently each month.
Bottom line
For Upwork earners, the EDF is about connecting three records: the Upwork invoice, the withdrawal and the bank's payment advice. If you need to file, prepare it each month with our free EDF form generator.
