EDF When You Get Paid Through Freelancer.com

₹

When a client hires you on Freelancer.com, the money moves from the client to the marketplace and then, when you withdraw, to your bank in India. For an agency or business that is a covered exporter, those earnings still go on your monthly EDF, filed with the bank that receives the withdrawal. The questions specific to marketplaces are who to name as the service recipient, how to evidence each payment, and how to deal with fees that make the credit smaller than the project value.

Key takeaways

  • Marketplace income is still export of services income. Businesses list it on the monthly EDF like any other foreign invoice.
  • The bank that credits your withdrawal is normally your AD bank. Confirm it accepts your EDF and treats those credits as export receipts.
  • The client receives the service, but the platform pays you. Ask your bank how it wants the recipient and third-party fields filled.
  • Withdrawals often bundle many projects. Keep a matching sheet from project invoices to withdrawals.
  • Check Freelancer.com's current India help pages for withdrawal methods, fees and documents. We do not describe its policies here.

How marketplace money reaches India

On most freelance marketplaces, the client funds a milestone or pays an invoice on the platform, the platform releases the funds to your account balance when the milestone is accepted, and you withdraw to your bank using one of the methods offered. Freelancer.com's exact withdrawal options, timings and fees change from time to time, so read its current India help pages rather than relying on anyone's summary, including ours.

From the EDF's point of view, three facts matter:

  1. When you raise the invoice. That fixes the EDF month.
  2. Which Indian bank receives the withdrawal. That is normally your AD bank.
  3. What evidence links the bank credit to your invoices. That closes EDPMS entries.

Who is the service recipient: client or platform?

Part 2B asks for the service recipient's name, address and country for each invoice. Part 1 also has fields 1.15 and 1.16 for a third party and its relationship.

On a marketplace, the person who receives your service is the client, while the platform collects the money and pays you. That looks like a third-party payment structure. Some exporters name the client as recipient and the platform as the third party; others treat their relationship as being with the platform. The answer can depend on Freelancer.com's terms of service and how your invoices are addressed.

We do not have verified guidance on how banks want marketplace income presented. Ask your AD bank before your first filing, and read our article on third-party payments in the EDF for the general principles.

Invoicing on a marketplace

Marketplaces generate their own records of milestones and payments, but those may not be invoices from your business. For EDF, GST and tax purposes, many agencies issue their own export invoice for each milestone or for each month's work per client.

Approach How it works EDF effect
Invoice per milestone Issue your invoice when the client releases a milestone One Part 2B row per milestone invoice
Monthly invoice per client Combine all milestones released for that client in the month Fewer rows; easy to match to withdrawals
Rely on platform records only No invoice from your side Ask your bank whether it accepts this; usually weaker for GST

The free export invoice generator creates a numbered invoice with LUT wording if you are GST-registered. Agencies working across several marketplaces will find more detail in our guide for Upwork and Fiverr agencies.

A worked example

Corvid Pixel Works LLP in Indore builds websites through Freelancer.com. In January 2027, three clients released milestones:

Invoice Client Country Milestones released USD INR value
CPW/27/006 Hollis Garden Supply USA Design, front end 2,400 ₹2,00,000
CPW/27/007 Brannagh Physio Ltd Ireland Full build 3,150 ₹2,63,000
CPW/27/008 Okafor Logistics Nigeria Maintenance, January 600 ₹50,000

Corvid issues three invoices dated 31 January 2027, one per client, and files one January EDF with three rows. January invoices are due by 2 March 2027.

On 8 February, Corvid withdraws its balance. After platform fees, the bank credits ₹4,81,000 (illustrative), less than the ₹5,13,000 invoiced. Corvid's matching sheet shows each invoice, its share of the withdrawal and the fees allocated to it. All three invoices are under ₹10 lakh, so the bank may close the entries on Corvid's quarterly realisation declaration.

Fees, NRV and the shrinking payout

Marketplace fees, withdrawal charges and conversion margins all reduce what reaches your bank. Part 2B asks for the invoice amount and the net realisable value (NRV) for each invoice. Settle with your bank and CA how fees should be reflected: some exporters show the invoice amount and an NRV net of expected fees; others treat fees as an expense. Consistency matters more than which reasonable method you pick.

Keep the platform's transaction history showing each project payment, the fee charged and the withdrawal it went into.

Payment evidence

For invoices above ₹10 lakh, the bank needs payment evidence and matching instructions to close the EDPMS entry. Marketplace withdrawals may come with platform statements, bank credit advices or FIRAs, depending on the withdrawal method and your bank. Check Freelancer.com's current India help pages for what it provides, and ask your bank whether it will issue a FIRA for each withdrawal credit.

Check every document for your name, the amount and currency, the date and the purpose code. Fix mismatches early.

Practical routine for marketplace earners

  • Each month-end: issue invoices for every milestone released, per client.
  • Same week: prepare the EDF listing those invoices.
  • On each withdrawal: download the platform transaction history and record which invoices it covers.
  • Quarterly: prepare your realisation declaration for invoices up to ₹10 lakh.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an EDF for Freelancer.com earnings?

If you work through a company, LLP, firm or proprietorship, yes, for invoices dated from 1 October 2026. Individuals on personal contracts have RBI's 7 October 2026 statement that they are not required to report, pending FAQs; confirm with your bank.

Who should I name as the recipient: the client or Freelancer.com?

The client receives the service, but the platform pays you, which resembles a third-party payment. Banks may differ on how they want this shown. Ask your AD bank and check how your invoices and the platform's terms describe the relationship.

Which bank is my AD bank for marketplace withdrawals?

Normally the Indian bank that receives the withdrawal into your account. Confirm with it that it treats these credits as export receipts and accepts your EDF.

How do I handle platform fees on the EDF?

Part 2B has columns for invoice amount and net realisable value. Agree with your bank and CA how fees are reflected, and keep platform statements showing each fee.

Does Freelancer.com issue FIRAs?

Check Freelancer.com's current India help pages for the documents it provides. Ask your bank too, since it may issue a FIRA or advice for the withdrawal credit.

Bottom line

Freelancer.com is a route for collecting money, not an exemption from the EDF. Issue your own invoices, confirm your AD bank and recipient treatment, and keep a matching sheet from invoices to withdrawals. Then build each month's form with the free EDF form generator.
