A channel run as a business, through a company, LLP, partnership or proprietorship, earns foreign money in two very different ways: platform payouts and invoices to overseas brands. Brand sponsorship invoices to foreign clients are plainly service exports and belong on your monthly EDF; platform ad revenue, where you raise no invoice, is a grey area you should settle with your AD bank before your first filing. Either way, the EDF is due within 30 days from the end of the month in which the invoice (or its equivalent) is dated.
Key takeaways
- Channel businesses operating through an entity should assume the EDF applies. Individual creators have RBI's 7 October 2026 statement to consider.
- Sponsorships, integrations and paid content for foreign brands are invoiced services: list each invoice as a Part 2B row.
- Platform ad revenue arrives without your own invoice. Ask your bank how it wants these receipts declared.
- Delivery mode is "Internet". Codes depend on the revenue stream; confirm with your CA and bank.
- Keep payout statements and FIRAs for every receipt; they are your evidence for realisation and GST.
Two revenue streams, two different questions
| Revenue stream | Who pays | Do you raise an invoice? | EDF position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand sponsorship or integration | Foreign brand or its agency | Yes | Clear service export; list each invoice |
| Paid content production for a brand's own channel | Foreign brand | Yes | Clear service export |
| Platform ad revenue share | The platform | Usually no; you get a payout statement | Grey area; ask your bank how to present it |
| Memberships, tips and similar | Platform, on behalf of viewers | Usually no | Grey area; same question |
| Affiliate commissions from foreign merchants | Merchant or network | Sometimes | Depends on arrangement; ask bank and CA |
The sponsorship row is straightforward. A US software company pays your channel USD 4,000 for a 90-second integration; you invoice it; that invoice goes on the EDF for the month it is dated.
Platform payouts are harder because the EDF is built around invoices: Part 2B asks for invoice number, invoice date and recipient. Some channel businesses raise their own monthly invoice to the platform entity matching the payout statement; others rely on the statement alone. We do not have verified guidance on which approach banks prefer. Ask your AD bank, in writing, how it wants platform revenue declared, and follow its answer consistently.
Entity or individual: which are you?
On 7 October 2026, RBI's Governor said individuals providing services abroad are not required to report, and the Deputy Governor said personal-contract transactions fall outside the reporting requirement. RBI said FAQs would follow. The Regulations' text has not changed yet.
That signal helps a solo creator who earns in their own name. It does not cover a channel run through a company or LLP with staff, editors and a current account. If you sit in between, say a proprietorship with a GSTIN and a trade name, assume you are covered until the FAQs say otherwise. Our article on whether YouTubers need to file the EDF covers the individual side.
Filling the EDF for a channel business
- 1.1 Type of export: Services.
- 1.4 Mode of delivery: Internet.
- 1.12 Mode of realisation: usually "Others" for bank transfers.
- 1.13 Recipient: the brand or agency you invoiced; for platform revenue, whatever your bank advises.
- 1.21 Description: for example, "Sponsored video content and advertising services".
- Part 2B: one row per invoice with SAC code, contract or insertion order reference, and remarks.
Codes
Sponsorships and integrations are advertising in substance, so SAC 998361 (advertising services) and purpose code P1007 (advertising, trade fair, market research) are reasonable starting points for that stream. Platform ad revenue may be tagged differently by the bank. Confirm both codes with your CA and bank; the purpose code finder is a good first filter.
A worked example
Pebble Street Media LLP in Pune runs two tech review channels with a team of five. In January 2027 it earned:
| Item | Payer | Document | Amount | INR value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSM/27/003 | Orbitly Inc (USA), sponsorship | Invoice | USD 4,000 | ₹3,34,000 |
| PSM/27/004 | Kolibri Audio GmbH, dedicated review | Invoice | EUR 2,600 | ₹2,39,000 |
| PSM/27/005 | Brightside Agency (Singapore) for a client's integration | Invoice | SGD 3,000 | ₹1,89,000 |
| Platform payout, January | Platform | Payout statement | USD 2,750 | ₹2,30,000 |
The three sponsorship invoices total ₹7,62,000 and go on the January EDF, due 2 March 2027 (February 2027 has 28 days). After checking with its bank, Pebble Street also raises a monthly invoice to the platform entity matching the payout statement, and the bank asked for that to be listed as a fourth row, bringing field 1.22 to ₹9,92,000. Another bank might take a different view; the point is to ask.
All rows are under ₹10 lakh, so the bank may close the EDPMS entries on a periodic realisation declaration once the money is in.
Realisation and the sponsor who pays late
Each invoice must be paid in full within 9 months from its date. Agency-intermediated deals are the usual late payers: the agency waits for its client, then pays you. Put payment terms in the insertion order and chase from day 31. If a payment drifts towards month eight, ask your bank for an extension before the deadline.
| Sponsorship month | Invoice date | Realisation deadline |
|---|---|---|
| January 2027 | 20 January 2027 | 20 October 2027 |
| February 2027 | 15 February 2027 | 15 November 2027 |
| March 2027 | 28 March 2027 | 28 December 2027 |
GST and the LUT
Sponsorship services to a foreign brand are generally a zero-rated supply where all five export conditions are met, including place of supply outside India. Most channel businesses export under LUT, with the invoice stating "Supply meant for export under LUT without payment of IGST". GST treatment of platform revenue deserves a separate conversation with your CA.
The EDF does not change your GST or income-tax obligations. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
Does a YouTube channel business need to file an EDF?
If the channel operates through a company, LLP, partnership or proprietorship and earns from foreign clients on invoices dated from 1 October 2026, assume yes. Individual creators should note RBI's 7 October 2026 statement and check with their bank until FAQs are issued.
Do platform ad revenue payouts go on the EDF?
This is not settled by the facts available to us. Because you usually raise no invoice, banks may differ on how they want it presented. Ask your AD bank in writing and follow its answer every month.
What purpose code applies to sponsorship income?
P1007 (advertising, trade fair, market research) is a common starting point for sponsorships and integrations. Confirm with your bank, especially if the payment comes through an agency.
Is a brand deal through a foreign agency still an export?
Generally yes, if the agency abroad contracts with you and pays you, and the other export conditions are met. The agency is then your service recipient in Part 2B. Your CA can confirm the place of supply position.
What delivery mode should a channel business choose?
"Internet", since content is delivered and published online.
Bottom line
For a channel business, sponsorship invoices are the easy part of the EDF; platform payouts need a clear answer from your bank before you file. Settle that once, list every foreign invoice monthly, and keep payout statements with your FIRAs. The free EDF form generator builds the form, and the export invoice generator handles sponsor billing.
